Driver Ed goes online

ACC / NZTA Practice website

ACC / NZTA Practice website

Learner drivers are a challenging audience. They’re keen to earn the freedom of a driver’s license, but in that wonderful “I already know everything I need to know” kind of way, teen drivers can be a tough group for anyone to teach.

That’s where the new Practice programme and website developed by AIM Proximity Wellington for NZTA and ACC comes in. To build an engaging experience for a savvy and, at times, fickle online audience, government accessibility has been thrown out the window in favour of a Flash environment, rich with smooth, sweeping transitions and a gritty look and feel – keeping it a little “street” for the kids.

This is all wrapped around a step-by-step programme for learner drivers practicing for their restricted license to buddy up with their guide, the person helping them learn to drive, to build up their skills and confidence with helpful videos and checkpoints along the way.

It’s well thought out, well structured, and has all the candy that a youth audience needs to keep their attention while learning the essential skills of driving.

This site is aimed at raising awareness of the risks and harms of cocaine use among 15- to 18-year-olds.  With a look and feel more like a social networking site, teens can post their own stories and pictures, watch video, play games and learn more through interactive information tools.  The site also features an online helpline via the FrankBot contact for instant messaging.  TV ads from the wider campaign (featuring Pablo, the drug mule dog) can also be viewed in the “Cocaine Basement”.

‘Yes we can’ create change through digital innovation

Arguably one of the most innovative and successful digital campaigns of the year came from the newly elected leader of the free world – Barack Obama

Yes we can be digital

On 4th of November Barack Obama won an historic victory in the US Presidential election. It was historic for a number of reasons, but of great interest to this forum is the way in which his campaign mobilised the nation through the innovative use of digital tools.

The Obama new media strategy played a vital role in turning the Obama campaign into a movement that gave followers the tools and motivation to provide true grassroots support. Through providing real-time campaign information at all digital touchpoints, simple ways to volunteer, join the debate, and convert online support into donations, the digital environment created a groundswell of support and income. It also successfully motivated a politically apathetic generation through speaking to them in environments and interactions that they could relate to.

It’s a great case that New Zealand politicians and brands alike could learn a great deal from.
